Home made pesticides and insecticidal plants

Garlic spray
Add 85gms chopped garlic bulbs to 50mls minerals oil (paraffin) and soak for 24hrs. Take 500ml water and add 7gms oil soap (palmolive) dissolve and mix and then add the chopped garlic and mineral oil and stir thoroughly. Strain through fine gauze or panty hose and store in a china or glass container. Dilute this solution 1 part to 20 parts of water and spray on leaves and stems. Kills aphids, thrip, downy mildew, black spot, cucumber scab, bean rust and brown spot.

Red spider mite spray
Brew up a very strong batch of coffee and then strain through fine gauze or panty hose for spraying - do not dilute with water - Spray at sunset only Kills bud mite and red spider mite.

Pesticide spray
Combine one clove of garlic, three red hot peppers, one half of a mild green pepper and half of a green onion in the kitchen blender using about half of a litre of water. Let the mixture stand for a few days then strain through fine gauze or pany hose and spray on plants. Kills aphids,thrip and most bugs.

Fungicide spray
Dissolve 7gms of potassium permanganate ( Condy's crystals) in 7 litres of water and spray onto infected plants. This liquid will not keep so must be used as soon as it is made up. Kills powdery mildew and fungal diseases.

Onion spray
Place a few green onions with an equal amount of water into the kitchen blender and blend thoroughly. Strain through fine gauze or panty hose and spray onto plants. Kills leaf curl and fungal diseases.

Fungicide spray 2
Add one teaspoonful of baking powder (bi-carbonate of soda) to one litre of water and spray onto infected parts at sun set only. Kills fungal and mildew diseases.

Rhubarb spray
Cut up one and a half kilograms of rhubarb leaves and boil in three and a half litres of water for 30 minutes. Grate 60gms of pure soap into four and a half litres of boiling water and thoroughly dissolve. When both liquids are cool mix together and then strain through fine gauze or panty hose and spray onto plant. Kills aphids,thrip and most bugs.

Chive spray
Use dried chives and pour 600mls of boiling water over the chives and stand the liquid for one hour. Dilute one part to two parts water and strain through fine gauze or panty hose and spray onto plants. Kills scab and mildew diseases.

Cockroach killer
Take one part boric acid and two parts sugar and dissolve in a small quantity of water and leave on a saucer where the coackroaches can drink the solution. Kills cockroaches and silverfish.
